A “Deep Dive” into the Life of an Environmental Scientist

Alyssa Giannoni, Sr. Environmental Scientist

What’s a career in environmental science look like? Alyssa Giannoni, a Project Manager and Sr. Environmental Scientist on the Environmental Management Team in our Adelaide, South Australia office, shares the perks of being an environmental scientist (snorkeling anyone?!) and why she pursued that career path.

Alyssa explained that her day-to-day work involves environmental and heritage impact assessments, environmental compliance, development approvals, and vegetation surveys. Working in both the office and field, Alyssa’s field work has taken her on some pretty amazing adventures, from deep beneath the ocean’s surface to coastal wetlands.

“The greatest aspect of my career has been the incredible variety in my day-to-day work. In addition to working on interesting projects, I enjoy the mixture of field and office work and the various locations projects take me,” she said.

Alyssa’s interest in how humans affect and interact with the environment led her to pursue a career in environmental science. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in marine biology with Honours in environmental biology from the University of Adelaide. To supplement her degrees, she also obtained several licenses, including ADAS Part 2 Commercial Diver, Coxswain NC1, Heavy Rigid Truck Driver, and Forklift Operator.

“The combination of these qualifications has enabled me to complete a variety of work, including coral reef surveys, fisheries assessments, aquatic pest eradication programs, marine and terrestrial Environmental Impact Assessments, wetland health studies and vegetation surveys,” Alyssa explained.

Her advice to aspiring environmental scientists, as well as those already working in the field, is to “take every opportunity that comes your way as you never know where it may lead.”

Reflecting on her career, Alyssa stated, “I am grateful to have an incredible career in science, and I’m thankful for the amazing mentors, colleagues, and friends I’ve gained over the last decade!”
