Service Station Groundwater Remediation

  • Service Station Groundwater Remediation
  • Service Station Groundwater Remediation

When two multinational petro-chemical companies needed help managing a co-mingled contamination plume that was emanating from two separate service station properties, they engaged Kleinfelder’s environmental site management services to control and alleviate the situation.

Managing Multiple Sites and Stakeholders

Contaminated plumes aside, managing this site involved balancing the opposing project objectives of two separate clients with different pre-established processes in order to advance the project through risk management, remediation, site assessment and property divestment—all within the State’s regulatory framework and close EPA scrutiny. Furthermore, the groundwater contamination plume existed beneath several adjoining properties, creating an additional level of stakeholder involvement. Kleinfelder needed to effectively manage relationships with clients, owners, users, local council, and state government.

Targeted Management, Dedicated Teams

On top of high-calibre in-house technical knowledge and expertise, Kleinfelder developed a targeted management structure and communication plan to ensure that both clients’ needs were met with accuracy and integrity. Kleinfelder dedicated separate project managers to each client to fully understand, represent, and communicate each client’s position without conflict of interest; and a dedicated  core project team communicated constantly to decide on effective, agreed-upon solutions.

Project Results

By successfully managing two clients with different project objectives and guiding them through regulatory compliance—all while providing the technical expertise for remediating and managing groundwater contamination—Kleinfelder eliminated both the health risks associated with an uncontrolled plume and the related fines from local and national agencies.
