A major multinational oil producer commissioned Kleinfelder to manage remedial excavation work at a former service station in Victoria, seeking to leave the site suitable for low-density residential use.

High-Cost Contamination Remediation

The site required remedial excavation works to address hydrocarbon and asbestos impact and aesthetic issues identified at site. This required the removal of several underground fuel storage tanks, remedial excavation of hydrocarbon hot spots, and removal of asbestos impacted soil which covered the entire site footprint. Because of the high costs of disposing the vast volume of soil impacted by asbestos, Kleinfelder needed to investigate alternative solutions to save the client money and reduce the volume of waste.

A Full Suite of Solutions

Kleinfelder first performed a cost-benefit analysis to take a deeper look at alternatives and options, then developed a scope of services that included auditor and regulatory advocacy, permitting and approvals, community notifications, and risk analysis and reporting. In addition to performing a range of related technical services—including geotechnical review, excavation and subgrade infrastructure removal, and waste classification and management—the team selected an asbestos soil remediation hand-screening technique to meet client needs at the lowest possible cost.

Project Results

By conducting onsite processing of a large volume of asbestos-impacted soil via a screening plant, Kleinfelder reduced the quantity of asbestos-impacted soil to be disposed of to a very small, manageable amount. In addition to satisfying EPA regulations, this solution contributed to a cost-savings of approximately $600,000 to the client.
