This major multinational energy client engaged Kleinfelder to provide infrastructure decommissioning work—including the demolition of an old service station, workshop facility, and double-story brick veneer residence—for its properties in Balywn North, Victoria.

Unexpected Elements

This projected contained multiple elements that necessitated both a multi-disciplinary team and strong leadership to ensure accurate, clear coordination across all project elements. Furthermore, the state of contamination on the site meant dealing with a high level of hazardous materials for this high-profile client. In addition, the team encountered additional unexpected underground storage tanks (USTs) mid-project, and needed to deliver exceptional project management to incorporate the change of plans without cost to the project.

Effective Site Management

Kleinfelder’s effective project management enabled safe and streamlined delivery of multifaceted decommissioning services, including a hazardous materials audit, safe removal and licenced disposal of hazardous materials, dilapidation surveys to assess surrounding communities, and erosion and sediment control. To deliver an expert level of remediation efforts, Kleinfelder provided specialised scientific assessments of groundwater prior to site demolition in addition to assessments of soil contamination after removal of underground petroleum storage systems (UPSS).

Project Results

By providing rapid response to unexpected project challenges—and adding extra assessment services to a typical removal practice—Kleinfelder delivered greater quality, risk management, and expertise without changing the project budget. Furthermore, clear communication allowed for stress-free, optimal collaboration with the client, further easing the blow of unforeseen project changes.
