Since the Director General of the Office of Environment and Heritage required a species impact statement (SIS) to be prepared for the expansion of Bloomfield Hospital, Kleinfelder identified, addressed, and reported the impact of the development on threatened species known to occur or likely to occur within the vicinity.

High-Profile Site Selection

A Species Impact Statement (SIS) was required by the Director General of the Office of Environment and Heritage for the expansion of Bloomfield Hospital—a necessary assessment as the proposed development was likely to affect threatened species, populations, ecological communities or their habitats. Kleinfelder investigated, identified, and addressed the impact of the development on threatened species known or likely to occur within the vicinity.

Developing Information-Driven Alternatives

Kleinfelder’s expert ecologists conducted extensive region-wide surveys targeting threatened species and communities. Next, Kleinfelder worked in conjunction with the client to alter the development design in a way that minimized site disturbance, while still meeting client needs—allowing for a better public face. Kleinfelder then identified and submitted a successful offset strategy in neighbouring properties to ensure conservation and flourishing of species in the region even in the face of development and change.

Project Results

By enabling successful essential development of the aged care facility while minimizing disturbance to the EEC and threatened species within, Kleinfelder provided a balance between development and conservation of an EEC—lessening public opposition and lowering the risk of the project being stalled or delayed.
