Kleinfelder was engaged to undertake weed control along a one kilometre stretch of Porters Creek, before it merges into the Wyong River. Works involved weed control along both sides of the creek line targeting major weeds, including Lantana, Blackberry, Camphor Laurel, and Privet.

Constricted Schedule and Heavy Workload

The area has high ecological significance, which means the works have to be undertaken with sensitivity to minimise potential non-weed damage. Large areas of the site adjacent to the river are also highly sensitive low-lying wetlands. A state and federally listed plant called Melaleuca biconvexa (listed as vulnerable) occurs within the site.

Quickly Mobilising Right Resources

Kleinfelder’s approach was to not use high-volume weed spraying with QuikSpray reels. Kleinfelder used more direct techniques of spraying, such as splatter gun and careful spot spraying using backpacks, and no spraying was done near water. Kleinfelder also undertook cut and painting of the Lantana to minimise target spraying. Kleinfelder staff had to familiarize themselves with the identification of the Melaleuca tree.

Project Results

Leveraging our deep understanding of the area and species, as well as careful spraying techniques, Kleinfelder achieved a very high kill rate of the targeted weeds, leading to successful revegetation in an area once dominated by weeds. As a result, our client has successfully protected biodiversity and water quality, while remaining in good standing with the community.
