Kleinfelder was engaged to perform bush regeneration services for 17 roadside sites across New South Wales government areas. The sites contained critically endangered flora, as well as the habitat for threatened fauna. The project aims to eradicate the noxious and environmental weeds that detrimentally impact these endangered species and areas.

Understanding the Sensitivity of the Vegetation

The client’s 17 roadside sites contained several critically endangered species. These sensitive vegetation types typically are not easily identified by the general public, but they are constantly impacted from the nearby land uses, as well as runoff from the roads. The sensitivity of the vegetation strongly influences the methodology for the control techniques used. Furthermore, some of these sites sit along high-traffic roads used by mining and other heavy equipment vehicles, which can be hazardous to workers.

Reduction of Competing Exotic Weed Species

The client recognised Kleinfelder’s skills and experience in botany and weed management to undertake the bush regeneration work within sensitive vegetation areas, while implementing traffic controls to ensure the safety of staff working alongside the dangerous road. Our work resulted in the reduction of competing exotic weed species, allowing the germination of natural flora species.

Project Results

By engaging Kleinfelder, the NSW government has ensured the existing vegetation is not only retained, but is expanding throughout the roadside reserves. Kleinfelder ensured the budget stayed on track with client requirements. Furthermore, we helped our client demonstrate good stewardship of government funding to improve the environment.
