VicRoads set out with the objective to understand their current environmental liabilities at 34 depot sites across Victoria. Kleinfelder was contracted to conduct preliminary site investigations (PSIs) of the sites in order to gain an understanding of the depots’ current environmental condition and how fuel and chemicals are stored on-site.

Overcoming Geographical and Time Constraints

The project involved conducting site investigations at 34 depots across the state of Victoria within a prescribed timeframe. Additionally, individual site environmental management plans (SEMPs) were developed for reference by on-site depot staff. Nine of the depots required the services of a certified electrician to assess the condition of electrical switchboards.

Developing a Geographical-Based Project Strategy

Kleinfelder assembled appropriately qualified teams to work on geographically identified groups of depots. Key criteria for each site visit was identified to ensure effective execution of the investigations, timely reporting of on-site data, and consistent PSI reporting of each depot to the client. This approach ensured all reports were submitted within the client’s prescribed schedule.

Project Results

Kleinfelder’s consistent and individualistic reporting method ensured the client received a cohesive report. The report findings and recommendations helped the client plan and budget for a Stage 2 program of further environmental site assessments, and a Stage 3 program consisting of AST/UST removals, infrastructure upgrades, and potential environmental remediation. Kleinfelder has been contracted to implement the Stage 2 program.
