Kleinfelder has been engaged by Lake Macquarie Council to undertake the control of Senegal Tea Plant (Gymnocoronis spilanthoides) along Slatey Creek. Senegal Tea Plant is a Class 1 Noxious Weed throughout New South Wales (NSW) under the NSW Noxious Weeds Act 1993. The work was carried out under Lake Macquarie’s EPA license 6337 and using the off-label permit PER11567 issued by the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicines Authority.

Difficult Access Points

The area has high ecological significance, which means the works have to be undertaken sensitivity to minimise potential non-weed damage. Furthermore, large sections of the creek were difficult to access for spraying. Work was carried out primarily by walking the creek banks and using backpack sprayers to treat Senegal Tea Plant. A vehicle-mounted spray unit was used in the areas of moderate infestation.

Navigating Terrain

Along large portions of Slatey Creek, a  kayak was used in areas where
the creek access along the bank was difficult. This was essential in navigating the terrain and successfully targeting the unwanted, noxious Sengel Tea Plant, to efficiently and effectively carry out the required weed control services.

Project Results

Our team of experts utilized their knowledge of the local area, as well as highly targeted spraying techniques, to successfully treat the specific species and avoid damaging non-weed species. As a result, there has been a significant reduction in the distribution of Senegal Tea and a reduction in the density of infestations, helping our client achieve compliance in a timely, cost-effective manner.
