Kleinfelder was engaged by Port Augusta Operations Pty Ltd (Port Augusta Operations) to obtain the necessary approvals and consents to establish the Port Playford Export Facility, a new bulk handling and transhipment facility at the former Augusta Power Stations site.

Project Overview

The Port Augusta Operations’ initial capital investment of $40 million Australian dollars in the development will unlock the beneficial reuse of the existing facilities and infrastructure, which have an estimated value of approximately $165 million. It is estimated that more than 100 people will be employed during the construction of the facility and 80 permanent positions will be required for the port operations. Kleinfelder worked on behalf of our client to secure Crown Development planning approval, by applying for and obtaining State Government sponsorship for the proposal, thus, streamlining the entire Development Application process.

Environmental Compliance Services

Specialist studies managed by Kleinfelder included: marine benthic surveys, coastal impact studies, site ecological and vegetation clearance assessments, hydrographic surveys, and noise / vibration, air quality, surface water, and traffic assessments.

Working closely with project stakeholders, including local residents already sensitised to historic environmental issues arising from the previous site owners’ tenure, Kleinfelder ensured concerns around the project’s development were managed efficiently with appropriate design-related controls.

Project Results

As lead consultant, Kleinfelder was responsible for the selection and completion of the most appropriate planning approval route. To support the Development Application, Kleinfelder advised on aspects to minimise impacts to the environment and any nearby sensitive land uses.

Following the development of Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs) for the construction phase of the project, Kleinfelder assisted the client in obtaining environmental licenses for the bulk-shipping operations and leading the negotiation of a Port Operating Agreement with the State Government.
