Kleinfelder was engaged to implement a VMP for a residential development that contains disturbed land close to an area of coastal saltmarsh Endangered Ecology Community (EEC).

Years of Disturbance to the Site

The site had experienced many years of disturbance and had various noxious and environmental weeds that required treatment as outlined in the VMP. Following successful completion of weed control, the site was then mulched and revegetated with native plant species. The VMP also called for revegetating bare areas within the Saltmarsh.

Facilitating a Natural Recovery

Kleinfelder successfully negotiated with the client and regulatory authority to forgo revegetating the bare areas in the Saltmarsh, as walking over the area to do the planting would cause more damage than benefits to the fragile ecosystem. To promote regrowth, Kleinfelder planted around the edge of the Saltmarsh, allowing it to recover naturally.

Project Results

Kleinfelder successfully removed all the noxious and environmental weeds that were on the site and properly revegetated sensitive areas of the Saltmarsh. Mulch was placed across the rehabilitated zones and 4,500 native plants were installed across the site. Kleinfelder has also been engaged to undertake the two-year maintenance program for the development.
