The Queensland Curtis Liquefied Natural Gas (QCLNG) project is one of Australia’s largest capital infrastructure projects. Under a contract with Corbet’s Land Clearing and Grinding, Kleinfelder and its partner SSSafe have been providing Fauna Spotter Catcher (FSC) services to a range of companies on the QCLNG project since August 2013.
Setting A Standard for Safety
Kleinfelder initially provided two FSC professionals to the QCLNG through a subcontractor. They encountered a lack of reporting, poor client liaison work, no focus on safety, and non-compliance with government regulators’ requirements—meaning that both QGC and Corbet’s were put at significant risk of losing project approvals. This, combined with the project’s harsh working conditions that included long hours, extreme temperatures, and multiple busy contractors on-site, meant that Kleinfelder needed to introduce a professional culture in order to reduce risk.
A New Level of Innovation and Professionalism
Within six weeks Kleinfelder had developed a new contract with Corbet’s, taking control of all FSC needs and providing fourteen FSC—including two in a supervisory role—who raised professionalism across the entire operation by introducing significant safety systems, processes, and resources; developing an accredited training course for FSC; introducing a data management and reporting system based on Trimble handheld field data units streamlining reporting and data management; and liaising with the state government regulators all while relocating fauna in a safe and ethical manner.
Project Results
Kleinfelder has raised the standard of the FSC industry, thereby reducing risk, creating efficiencies, and producing results for our clients. Kleinfelder has introduced a data collection and reporting system based on handheld field data collection units, developed the only nationally accredited FSC training course, liaised with government regulators, and built a team of dedicated FSC professionals.
