Following completion of a successful multi-depot preliminary site investigation program at 37 of our client’s road service depots across Victoria, where Kleinfelder’s report findings and recommendations helped the client plan and budget for further environmental site assessments and ongoing environmental compliance upgrades, the client selected Kleinfelder to provide the next stage of work – detailed investigations, an environmental management plan (EMP) and compliance audits.
Understanding the Requirements
To ensure compliance with the Environmental Protection Amendment Act 2018, which saw widespread changes come into effect on 1 July 2021, Kleinfelder’s client took a proactive approach to their due diligence and developed a program of works to meet the amended Act requirements.
Preparing for Amended Act Compliance
Kleinfelder assisted the client by developing a statewide EMP and site-specific EMPs to facilitate communication and implementation of the amended Act requirements. Environmental awareness training was provided to ensure all staff were equipped with the tools and knowledge to manage environmental issues. Ongoing inspections were implemented to facilitate continuous improvement of the depots’ environmental performance and to monitor potentially contaminating activities, with Kleinfelder completing annual environmental site compliance audits at all 37 depots.
Project Results
Kleinfelder recommended specific active measures to rectify identified high-risk issues. These have been implemented by the client with assistance and guidance from Kleinfelder. As a result of the investigative program, the client proactively removed several underground storage tanks, upgraded numerous triple interceptor traps, and further investigated potential sources of contamination.
