Sibelco has consent to mine white silicate sand from Tanilba Northern Dune NSW. An Environmental Management Plan (EMP) was prepared as part of consent conditions to guide ongoing rehabilitation of cleared areas and restore native vegetation to vegetation diversity and structure similar to pre-clearing. Kleinfelder was commissioned in 2005 to monitor vegetation rehabilitation progress.

Facilitating Accurate Data Collection

Consistent data collection by various staff is a significant challenge for large data sets, with the risk associated with data accuracy. Kleinfelder recognized this could affect the data quality for the long-term project. To facilitate accurate data collection, Kleinfelder has provided the same scientists on the project since its inception. Any new scientists that are engaged to assist in data collection are trained over one or two monitoring periods, and the data is reviewed by the senior botanist prior to report preparation.

Mapping Potential Flora Projection Areas

During pre-clearance surveys, Kleinfelder mapped out potential Flora Protection Areas targeting the balance between mineral volume and ecological values, resulting in maximum mineral extraction for the dune. Kleinfelder botanists also identified a threatened tree (Eucalyptus camfieldii). Individuals and clumps of the tree were located on the highest and lowest elevations of the extraction area. Kleinfelder provided ecological services to assist the threatened species assessment and impact mitigation.

Project Results

Kleinfelder’s deep expertise and quality work enabled us to successfully review our client’s complex EMP and propose an alternative monitoring methodology. This led to consent for development, while mitigating any risk and concern for the environment and surrounding communities, allowing our client to proceed with profitable mining operations.
