Weed Management – Offset Land

  • Weed Management – Offset Land
  • Weed Management – Offset Land

For more than 6 years, Kleinfelder has supported the efforts of a mining company (client) to undertake weed control within their offset land as well as land that has been rehabilitated as part of the client’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Constant Pressure from the Growth of Weeds

Kleinfelder’s client is committed to restoring the site’s native plant community. The site, which was once an open cut mine, has been shaped to reflect the topography of the local area. Rehabilitation efforts involve spreading seed to aid in regrowth of native vegetation, however, the area is under constant pressure from the growth of weeds which can suppress seed germination.

Using Vehicles and GPS Trackers to Expedite Work

Kleinfelder’s Land Management team administers weed treatment at the site so the native plants can successfully establish in the area. As the area is vast, this is predominately done using a vehicle mounted twin reel spray unit. The team methodically traverses the site, treating the weeds as they encounter them. A GPS tracker is used to track each visit. The data is then downloaded to create a map that clearly shows the combined efforts of each weed treatment at the site over a 10-month period.

Project Results

Kleinfelder’s methodical and systematic approach to providing weed management facilitates development of a monthly detailed report incorporating the maps of treated areas. As a result of the weed treatment, native plants are successfully establishing where the client’s rehabilitation work has taken place.
