Since 2018, Kleinfelder have partnered with Essendon Fields (EF) Airport to assist them with their environmental management and compliance duties as detailed in the Airports Regulations (1997). Kleinfelder has brought a systemic approach to EF’s methods, ensuring the duties of the airport are met proactively and efficiently for EF and their airport tenants.

The Power of Knowledge

Utilizing GIS mapping software, Kleinfelder assisted EF to develop a detailed map of contaminated soil laydown and stockpile areas across the airport. Kleinfelder developed a construction environmental management plan (CEMP) framework document to be applied to all development activities across EF. The framework details critical information on the management and handling of PFAS-impacted soils and their movement/placement around the airport.

The Power of Partnership

Kleinfelder, serving as EF’s on-site environmental representative, completed construction inspections, ensuring work adhered to the site’s environmental requirements as detailed in the CEMP. Additionally, Kleinfelder was able to contribute key findings and processes from their abundance of compliance experience and assist EF in creating a new incident response procedure which has been implemented sitewide to tenants who are not meeting their environmental obligations.

Project Results

Kleinfelder and EF’s partnership has consciously endeavoured to build new policies and procedures into the fabric of the airport’s operations to manage and monitor the handling, movement, and impacts of known contaminants.
The partnership’s proactive approach to environmental management has ensured quick action is taken when issues occur, thus ensuring minimal environmental harm to the site and neighbouring communities. This approach received recognition by the Australian Land and Groundwater Association.
